Texas Storm Season: How to Clean Up After Storm Damage in Georgetown, Hutto, Cedar Park, Leander, and Round Rock
BuildForce Dumpster Rentals – Austin | Round Rock, TX
If you have lived in Central Texas for more than a year, you know the drill. Spring rolls in, the sky turns green, and suddenly you are watching the weather radar like it is a playoff game. Hail, high winds, flash flooding, tornadoes. Williamson County gets hit with all of it. And when the storm passes, you walk outside and your yard looks like a war zone.
Broken tree limbs everywhere. Shingles scattered across the lawn. Fence panels down. Maybe a whole tree fell across the driveway. That mess is not going to fit in your weekly trash cart. And your city’s bulk pickup might be weeks away, especially when the whole neighborhood got hit at the same time.
I have been through this with our customers in Georgetown, Hutto, Cedar Park, Leander, and Round Rock multiple times. After every major storm, our phones light up. People need dumpsters fast, and they need straight answers about what to do with all the debris. Here is everything I know about cleaning up after a storm in Williamson County.
Step 1: Document the Damage Before You Touch Anything
I know the instinct is to start cleaning up immediately. Resist that urge for about 30 minutes and take photos of everything first. Your insurance company needs documentation of the damage before you start removing debris. Walk around your entire property and photograph downed trees, damaged fencing, missing shingles, broken siding, damaged vehicles, and anything else the storm affected.
Take wide shots showing the full scope and close-ups showing specific damage. Date-stamp them if your phone allows it. If tree limbs hit your roof, photograph them still resting on the roof before you move them. This documentation can make or break your insurance claim.
Also check for hazards before you start cleanup. Downed power lines, leaking gas lines, and structurally damaged trees can all be dangerous. If you see a downed power line, do not go near it. Call Oncor or your electric provider immediately. If you smell gas, call 911 and Atmos Energy.
Step 2: Check What Your City Offers for Storm Debris
After a significant storm event, most cities in Williamson County activate enhanced debris collection programs. This varies by city and by storm severity, but here is what each city typically offers.
Round Rock allows residents to schedule one free bulk pickup per year, but after a major storm, the city often arranges additional curbside collection. Keep an eye on the City of Round Rock website and social media channels for announcements. Tree limbs should be cut to 4 feet or shorter and bundled or stacked at the curb.
Georgetown has a brush collection program through the city. After storms, Georgetown Public Works sometimes arranges extra pickups. Contact them at 512-930-3640 or check georgetown.org for storm response updates. Georgetown also has a yard waste drop-off at the Municipal Complex for residents.
Cedar Park uses Republic Services for residential collection. After storms, Republic Services may schedule additional pickups, but availability depends on the scale of the event. Check cedarparktexas.gov or call 512-528-2800 for storm-specific guidance.
Leander residents should contact the city at 512-528-2800 for storm debris information. Response varies by provider and storm severity.
Hutto is served by Waste Connections. After storms, check the city website or call 512-759-4000 for information about emergency debris collection.
Here is the reality though. After a big storm, every city in Williamson County gets overwhelmed. When thousands of homes have debris at the curb all at once, city collection can take weeks to cycle through every neighborhood. If you need your yard cleared quickly, either because it is a safety issue, your HOA is pressuring you, or you just cannot leave a pile of branches in your front yard for three weeks, a dumpster is the fastest solution.

Step 3: Know What Size Dumpster You Need for Storm Cleanup
Storm debris is bulky but relatively light compared to construction materials. Tree limbs, branches, leaves, and brush take up a lot of space but do not weigh much per cubic yard. That means you usually need a bigger container than you think, but you are unlikely to hit the weight limit.
For a single yard with moderate storm damage, a few downed limbs and some shingle debris, a 15 yard dumpster usually handles it. That is about 4 to 5 pickup truck loads.
For a yard with a large downed tree, significant roof debris, and fence damage, go with a 20 or 30 yard. A large oak or pecan tree, which are all over Georgetown and Round Rock, can fill a 20 yard dumpster by itself once you cut it up.
For severe damage affecting the whole property, multiple trees down, significant roofing debris, siding, gutters, and fencing, a 30 or 40 yard is the right call. This level of damage often comes with an insurance claim, and having one large container simplifies the process.
At BuildForce, we prioritize storm cleanup deliveries. When a storm hits Williamson County, we move our schedule around to get dumpsters to affected homes as fast as possible. Same day delivery is often available if we have inventory, and during storm season we keep extra containers ready.

Step 4: Know What Goes in the Dumpster and What Does Not
Most storm debris is perfectly fine for a dumpster. Tree limbs, branches, brush, leaves, roof shingles, plywood, siding, gutters, fence boards, and general yard debris all go in without any issues.
What does not go in: appliances that were damaged by flooding if they contain refrigerant, propane tanks, chemical containers that may have broken open during the storm, and any materials contaminated with sewage if there was a sewage backup during flooding.
If a tree fell on a structure and you are pulling out insulation, drywall, and roofing material mixed with the tree, all of that can go in the dumpster together. Construction debris and storm debris can share the same container.
Step 5: Filing an Insurance Claim for Storm Cleanup
If the storm damage is significant, your homeowner’s insurance may cover the cleanup costs, including the dumpster rental. Here is what most insurance adjusters want to see.
Photos of the damage taken before cleanup started. Receipts for all cleanup expenses, including dumpster rental, tree removal, and any temporary repairs. A written estimate or invoice from your dumpster company. A list of damaged items with approximate values.
At BuildForce, we provide a detailed invoice for every rental that includes the delivery date, pickup date, container size, weight, and total cost. This paperwork is exactly what insurance companies need for claim processing. We are happy to work with your adjuster if they need any additional documentation.
One important note: do not wait for the insurance claim to be approved before cleaning up. Storms create safety hazards, and your policy typically requires you to mitigate further damage. Clean up first, submit receipts later.
